Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in School Safety, Security and Emergency Management

The Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in School Safety, Security, and Emergency Management offers certified teachers and classified staff three distinct and connected domains: school safety, school security, and school emergency management. You will learn about diverse topics such as technologies to manage safety, security, and emergencies; threat assessments of people and facilities; restorative justice and other alternatives to student discipline; and how to contribute, implement, and improve school safety plans through a practitioner’s perspective. These are important and aware practices that school administrators and staff would benefit from in both day-to-day operations and improving school morale, as students who feel safe and secure at school are better able to learn by engaging the curriculum, their teachers, and their peers.

Throughout the program you will explore the similarities and differences among safety, security, and emergency management within K-12 school settings, as well as recommend technologies that address safety, security, and emergency management in K-12 educational contexts. You will apply instructional design practices and technology options to lead and educate diverse groups, investigate evidence-based solutions for addressing educational, organizational, and community issues, and explain educational theories, research, and practices to diverse audiences. You will also recommend solutions to ethical dilemmas in diverse educational and organizational settings and integrate professional standards into practice for leading and educating diverse groups.

Additionally, you will investigate the balance of social order and social justice within K-12 educational contexts and critique K-12 school safety plans for principles of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.
