John LaNear, PHD, JD

Dr. John LaNear has been with Northcentral University since 2013, most recently serving as Senior Vice President, Academic Affairs. He has more than 20 years of experience in higher education, serving previously as president, provost, dean and faculty member. Prior to his work in higher education, he practiced law and served as Assistant Attorney General in the Missouri Attorney General’s Office.

Dr. LaNear has researched and written in the area of education law, with a focus on legal issues relating to students with disabilities. He has been published in the Encyclopedia of Education Law, the Journal of Educational Administration and History, the Journal of Law and Education, the Education Law Reporter, and Student Affairs Law and Policy Weekly. He served as a guest editor for the Journal of Law and Education and was a member of West’s Education Law Reporter’s Author’s Committee. He has given numerous professional presentations for a variety of organizations, including the Association for Study of Higher Education, the Education Law Association, the American Education Research Association, and the University Council for Educational Administration.

Dr. LaNear completed his Doctor of Philosophy in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis in 2005 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (also earning a Master of Science in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis at U.W. in 2004). He was a Fellow at the Higher Education Law Roundtable at the University of Houston, was awarded the Outstanding Dissertation of the Year by the Education Law Association, and received Honorable Mention for Outstanding Dissertation from the American Education research Association, Division A.

Additionally, he graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law in 1994 with a Juris Doctor degree. He served as Articles Editor on the UMKC Law Review, and was a member of the Moot Court Board and the ABA National Trial Team. He was selected to the Order of Barristers and was awarded the Thomas Deacy Trial Lawyer Award and an American Jurisprudence Award. Dr. LaNear also graduated from Missouri State University in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts in English.
