I identify myself as Korean, which is half of my nationality. My siblings and I were raised by a single South Korean mother who is very traditional. I spent nine years growing up in Korea. When I moved to Arizona at age 10, it was a foreign place to me.

Northcentral University’s Department of Marriage and Family Sciences is hosting an online guest lecture on Thursday, May 19. The title of the lecture is: The Post-Divorce Adjustment Process in Families & Children: Research & Treatment.

NCU Kick-Starter Grant recipient and aspiring author, Jane Symkoviak, was an elementary school teacher for 18 years before deciding to pursue her Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy (MAMFT) degree at Northcentral University.

Symkoviak discovered how to fulfill her desire to write while making a difference in the lives of grade school children. “I had the idea to create a series of picture books,” she said.

William Hancock, NCU Kick-Starter Grant recipient and Doctor of Philosophy in Business Administration student, has seen first-hand how difficult it is for former inmates to rebuild their lives.

“I have known several people in my life who have had felonious backgrounds,” he explains. “I have seen them struggle in life more than the average citizen in society.”

The NCU Kick-Starter grant recipient will use the $20,000 grant he will receive upon graduation to establish an organization that will help newly released prisoners reintegrate into society.

Tanisha Smith, NCU Kick-Starter Grant recipient, understands the agony of hearing loss. A Human Resource Officer in the U.S. Army and student in NCU’s Doctor of Business Administration program, Smith has normal hearing but she witnessed the devastating impact hearing loss had on family members.
