Why I Teach - Dr. Cynthia Akagi, Professor, School of Education

I teach at NCU because NCU has an excellent School of Education. Our School of Education offers more than 30 doctoral education specializations, making it easy for full-time educators to receive advanced degrees. I’ve taught at NCU since 2013 and I love teaching for NCU because I get to mentor educators across the U.S. and the world who are pursuing their doctorates. NCU truly cares about its students, faculty and staff. Respect for education and inclusiveness and diversity is paramount at NCU.

I work with an exceptional group of colleagues lead by an exceptional administration. I taught at an on-ground university prior to teaching at NCU and the leadership, colleagues and staff at NCU are top-notch! Our yearly graduation weekend in Phoenix is the highlight of each year I work at NCU. I have the honor of hooding all my doctoral students who’ve graduated the past year as they walk across the stage to receive their diplomas. I host a breakfast Saturday morning before the graduation ceremonies with all my students so the students can meet each other and we can reflect on the education journeys that brought us to NCU. The students reminisce with each other about Dr. Akagi’s copious feedback on their dissertation documents that helped them become doctoral scholars. If I was seeking a university today in which to pursue my master’s or doctorate, I would choose NCU. NCU gives full time working adults the opportunity to pursue advanced degrees while continuing to support their families. In a word, family is what Northcentral University is all about. NCU is my education family!
