Why I Teach - Amanda Bezet, MLS, Reference & Instruction Librarian

Amanda Bezet and Child

When I tell people that I’m an academic librarian for a completely online university, I often see puzzled looks on their faces as they try to work out what that actually means. The closest they can get to is, “So, the books are all online then? Cool.” What they don’t know is that it’s SO much more than that. They don’t know that I get to design innovative library services to reach our online students. They don’t know that I get to attend Dissertation Boot Camps and interact with our students in some of the most interesting cities in the world. They don’t know that I get to meet virtually one-on-one with students to provide targeted library research strategies for their dissertations. They don’t know that I get to hear these students say they feel excited and inspired to continue with their research. They don’t know that I get to write articles, present posters, and attend professional conferences. They don’t know that I get to challenge myself in other ways, such as serving on an accreditation writing team. They don’t know that I get to form strong relationships with colleagues both inside and outside of my department. They don’t know that I get to call these colleagues friends. And, finally, they don’t know that working as a virtual employee for NCU afforded me the opportunity to adopt my daughter Hazel and keep her by my side during my workday. They don’t know that I haven’t had to miss her first steps, first foods, first words, first time opening a book (hey, I AM a librarian!). This is why I work at NCU. This is why I’m devoted to NCU.
