Mary Streit - Irish American Heritage Month

As most Irish-Americans, in my family, we celebrate St Patrick’s Day on March 17th.  When reflecting a bit more on what this day means to me, I pulled out a brief historical interview of my maternal grandmother, and read it over.  I thought it would be beneficial for me to do this for two reasons.

Why I Teach - Marie Bakari, DBA

I believe that we are guided to our destiny by others’ deeds and words. While working as a dental hygienist, I engaged with patients to learn a little about them, their lives, and their careers. During these conversations I could figure out what made them ‘tick’ so that I could find a way to teach each person how to achieve optimal dental health. What I did not realize was how inspired I would become by these interactions to learn, be curious about business, and to start a new career as an educator.

Family Dinner by Rachel Heater, MS

Poll results about the family table provide varied results, with some reporting shared family meals still at a high rate (Ferdman, 2014), while others indicate dinnertime is rapidly becoming a dying tradition (Delistraty, 2014). One thing, however, is a certainty: modern families have a litany of hurdles to overcome when it comes to banding together to eat. Factors related to resources such as household income, employment, and the increase in two-parent working families have negatively impacted the family dinner.

Why did you choose to go back to school and pursue a doctorate degree? I set the bar for my personal goals of success at the top, the highest I could go. I didn’t want to go out into the world and find that there were doors that weren’t open to me because I didn’t have a high enough degree. With a PhD, it’s the highest I can go, and it eliminates glass ceilings in the career force. If I want to teach at a university, I have a better chance having a PhD than I do with a master’s degree.

Why I Teach - By Annabelle Goodwin

I have been teaching at Northcentral University for nearly 7 years. When I first began, I had a partner, a toddler, an infant, and a yellow lab named Parker. As I met with my students on the phone or through video conferencing, I was struck by the wonderful diversity of people who were showing up to study marriage and family therapy with the purpose of bringing healing to others and to themselves. My students inspire me. They come from all different backgrounds, have unique lives and professional experiences, and they are hard-working.

Building an Online Learning Community through Cruising and Other Innovative Approaches

A challenge with online learning is ensuring you build a community for student-to-student and student-to-faculty engagement. By design, our 1-to-1 “Teaching Through Engagement (TTE)” model promotes faculty-to-student community. To build student-to-student and student-to-alumni community among all constituencies requires additional approaches.

Take a Moment with NCU Alumni, David Berner, EdD

David Berner, who recently completed his Doctor of Education in Organizational Leadership at Northcentral University took a moment to talk with us about his journey to earning his EdD. Dr. Berner was only two courses away from completing his doctorate when his previous university, Argosy, suddenly closed its doors, bringing his journey to a screeching halt. That is, until he found Northcentral University. We took a moment with Dr. Berner to talk about his journey to earning his EdD:
