Dr. Abdi shares why she chose to return to school, what drew her to NCU, and her advice to prospective NCU students.

Why did you decide to go back to school?

It wasn't a matter of deciding to 'go back', I always wanted to pursue a doctoral degree but there were gaps in between my degrees due to family, marriage, and career obligations. I always thought only doctoral research can guarantee deep understanding of problems.

What drew you to NCU?

A recruiter at urban districts told me about NCU and I chose it due to its flexibility. My kids were small and I really appreciated a school that could offer me the balance between being a mom, a career woman and a student.

What advice do you have for prospective students interested in enrolling in your same program at NCU?

If you want to earn money become an entrepreneur, if you enjoy researching, reading and writing for hours and years, with no weekends or vacations, and actually thinking that it is fun, then a doctoral degree is for you.

How did your family or friends support you during your educational journey?

My husband was my biggest cheerleader and my rock. No one felt the journey and its struggles as he did yet always encouraged me and offered his shoulder to cry on. From taking the boys to their athletic games and having dinner without me to cooking and washing dishes he was always there to support me. Without him this was impossible.

If you have written any articles or books, please tell us about them and why you wrote them?

My many research, interviews and articles have been published in various international and national journals and websites. I am also an invited guest to many scientific conferences and peer-reviewed journals. I authored two books on education and contributed several chapters on bio-mechanics to a few books. I wrote them to contribution to the body of knowledge.
