Graduation Event Registration

Commencement 2014
Northcentral University bachelor's and master's students who are enrolled in their last class, and doctoral students who have passed their oral dissertation defense - as of May 1, 2014 - are invited to walk in Commencement 2014. Commencement 2014 will be held at the Orpheum Theatre in downtown Phoenix, Arizona, on Saturday, June 7, from 10 a.m. to noon. You will need to register online to participate in Commencement 2014. Each graduate may request up to six tickets (one for yourself, and five others for guests). You and your guests will pick up your tickets on Saturday morning, June 7, when you arrive at the Orpheum Theatre. When you register, you will also be asked if you would like your name to appear in the 2014 Graduation Program, and if so, how you would like it to appear.

If you are unable to attend Commencement, but would still like to have your name included in the 2014 Commencement Program, please complete this brief form no later than April 30, 2014. We will then mail you a copy of the program after Commencement.

Graduation Reception
Following Commencement 2014 on Saturday, we invite you to join Northcentral University leaders for a Graduation Reception in your honor, from 1 to 3 p.m., held at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown. If you plan to attend the reception following Commencement, please RSVP here.

Academic Recognition Reception
Prior to Commencement 2014, on Friday, June 6, the University will host an Academic Recognition Reception at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown from 4 to 7 p.m. The event will include award presentations, honor society inductions and the Graduate Student Poster Session. We will also be hooding our doctoral graduates at this time. Doctoral graduates do not need to wear their regalia, but will need to have their hood with them. ArtNeedle will be on site at the Sheraton on Friday night so you can pick up your regalia. The NCU Student & Alumni Store will also be open for you to purchase merchandise. If you plan to attend the Academic Recognition Reception, please RSVP for the event here.

Visit our Awards tab for more information about how to participate in the Graduate Student Poster Session.

Graduation FAQ

Do I need to register for all graduation events, or just one? Please register for every event you plan to attend. In previous years, we had students register for the Graduation Reception, but not for Commencement. As a result, the students' names were not listed in the program. Likewise, if a student does not register for the Academic Recognition Reception, but plans to attend and be recognized for their participation in a certain honor society, we might not have your name on our list to be recognized, and as a result, might not have enough cords. We want to ensure that all graduates are included so please help us out and RSVP for each even you plan to attend.

If I can't make it to Graduation, may I purchase a graduation tassel? Yes. You may send an email (preferred) to jloehr@artneedle.com requesting your tassel. ArtNeedle will ship your tassel via US Post.

If I missed the cut-off date for Commencement last year, but want to attend this year and already have my degree, do I need to bring it with me?

No, you do not need to bring your diploma with you. You will receive the same diploma holder as everyone else when you walk.

What are NCU's hood colors? NCU colors are royal blue and gold. NCU hoods are lined with gold (the part that is exposed). Trim colors for the hood are different according to the branch of learning/degree. The colors associated with NCU's degrees are drab (School of Business and Technology Management), light blue (Education) and golden yellow (Psychology and Marriage and Family Sciences). Keep this in mind when renting or ordering your regalia. ArtNeedle is extremely helpful and will be happy to answer any of your regalia questions. You can email John at ArtNeedle at: jloehr@artneedle.com.

If I'm renting my regalia, do I have to pick up my cap and gown from Northcentral University or will there be a place to pick it up and drop it off at the ceremony? Artneedle will be at the Orpheum Theatre the morning of graduation and you can pick it up then and return it after the ceremony. If you attend the Academic Recognition Reception the night before, you can also pick it up at that time.

Why is there a limit on the number of tickets I can order? Are there any exceptions?
We limit the number of tickets to six per graduate because seating at the Orpheum is limited and we want to be sure that each graduate has equal opportunity to invite their friends and family. When you registered for Commencement, you had the option of being put on the waitlist for additional tickets if there are some left over. If you would like to be put on the waitlist for additional tickets at this time, please contact Alanna Vitucci (avitucci@ncu.edu).

I'm in an honor society, when will I receive my cords/medal to wear with my regalia?
Honor society inductions will be held at the Academic Recognition Reception on Friday, June 6, 2014. If you think that you qualify for an honor society, but have not yet received an invitation to join, please use the contact information below to contact the appropriate person.  If you are planning to attend the Academic Recognition Reception please do not forget to RSVP at http://www.eventbrite.com/e/2014-northcentral-university-academic-reception-tickets-10460464531. We need to be sure that we have enough cords/medals for everyone attending.

Who chooses the Dissertation of the Year? Northcentral University recognizes the scholarly achievements of its doctoral students by honoring annually the outstanding dissertation for the University. Nominations are made by dissertation chairs, and the Provost and a review committee make the final determination of the award. The award is based on the significance of the research to society, the discipline, and the student’s profession.

I would like to have my portrait taken at Graduation? Will there a be a photographer on site and when and where can I get my portrait taken?
There will be a photographer on site during the entire ceremony taking pictures of the event. After graduation, he will be set up to take graduate portraits at the Graduation Reception at the Sherton from 1 to 3pm. You can get a portrait taken by yourself, include your family or friends, or whatever you would like. Pictures will be available to order on the photographer's website usually a week after the event. We will send out a communication when the pictures are available. If you are planning to attend the Graduation Reception, please do not forget to RSVP at: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/2014-northcentral-university-graduation-reception-tickets-10460608963.

Who is the graduation speaker this year? This year's speaker is Rich Karlgaard,  columnist and publisher of Forbes magazine and author of Life 2.0: How People Across America Are Transforming Their Lives by Finding the Where of Their Happiness.

Graduate Student Poster Session

The 2014 Graduate Student Poster Session will be held prior to the Academic Recognition Reception on Friday, June 6, 2014, at the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown in Phoenix, AZ. The purpose of the Graduate Student Poster Session is to give students the opportunity to showcase their research; to communicate their results to other students, family, friends, faculty and staff; and to learn about other areas of research and creative activity.

Graduates who have completed their dissertation paper and completed their oral presentation by March 31st of the current academic year are eligible to present at the poster session. Example: Dissertation must have been completed and approved between April 1, 2013 and March 31, 2014 for a 2014 nomination. Graduate students who wish to have their work considered for presentation are encouraged to submit their dissertation abstract to awelch@ncu.edu by April 1, 2014. Submissions will be judged on factors such as writing quality, significance of research and findings, research method, and interpretation of results. Those selected to present will be contacted and provided with information regarding poster criteria.

This is YOUR opportunity to share your knowledge and experiences with fellow NCU graduates, family, friends, and colleagues! Please view the 2013 Dissertation of the Year Award winner and her poster presentation at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRA4_jAq0V0.
