01/14/13 - Northcentral University’s Partnership with the NEA Academy and I CAN Learn® Offers Math Educators a Method to Simultaneously Obtain CEUs, Common Core Prep, and Graduate Credit
This new partnership provides NEA members with an opportunity to earn credit toward a graduate degree online while meeting their professional continuing education requirements and preparing for math-centric Common Core State Standards (CCSS).
PRESCOTT VALLEY, ARIZ, January 14, 2013 – Northcentral University (NCU) proudly announces its new partnership with the NEA Academy and I CAN Learn® with an initial offering of three math courses designed to help prepare educators for the new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for math. The NEA Academy provides an online gateway for National Education Association (NEA) members to participate in high-quality continuing education courses and programs from select partners. The I CAN Learn graduate-level professional development courses focus on math content as well as pedagogy. Upon completion of the 4-week I CAN Learn Courseware section teachers have the opportunity to earn one graduate credit towards a degree at NCU.
“We are excited about this new partnership with the NEA Academy and NCU. Our proven math content instruction, coupled with NCU's one-to-one, 100 percent doctoral faculty, will ensure that each graduate credit earned will better prepare members to teach the appropriate grade level progressions as required by the new Common Core State Standards for math,” stated John Lee, president and founder of I CAN Learn. I CAN Learn recently earned the highest rating of “Positive Effects” from the What Works Clearinghouse and was noted as developing “Highly Effective Teachers” per an independent, peer-reviewed study conducted by researchers from Princeton University.
“These courses are designed to prepare educators in the knowledge and skills students need in order to be successful by grade level,” notes Dr. Cindy K. Guillaume, dean, School of Education, Northcentral University. “Our responsibility,” Dr. Guillaume continued, “is to train educators to make an impact in the classroom and increase student performance.”
Northcentral’s School of Education offers Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral degrees in Education as well as Certificates of Advanced Studies for Education or Education Specialist, and a Doctoral degree in Philosophy of Education with 15 unique specializations including Curriculum and Teaching, Education Leadership, and Special Education. “We understand that teachers are busy professionals who need flexibility in meeting their professional development and continuing education requirements. This partnership is designed to provide that flexibility while allowing students to earn graduate credit simultaneously,” adds Dr. Guillaume.
